One-year-old boy needs overseas treatment

One Amat Bah, a one-year old boy and resident of Fajara Barracks in Bakau, Kanifing Municipality, is in urgent need of overseas treatment.According to a medical report obtained from the Royal Victoria Teaching Hospital (RVTH), the patient, Amat Bah was presented to the Pediatric Neurology Clinic with an inability to achieve his age appropriate neurodevelopmental milestones historical notes suggestive a neonatal encephalopathy. 

Speaking to the Daily Observer, Mariama Jatta, mother of the patient, said her son is in a critical condition. She therefore appealed to the government, NGOs and individuals to assist her, saying Amat is her only child.

Editorial 

The development prospect of any nation is dependent on its economy.  Therefore, one would expect that the conspicuous development transformation The Gambia has undergone since July 22, 1994 can only be credited to a parallel achievement in an economic sector that continues to receive clean bills of health from international financial and monetary institutions around the world.

What was a traditionally agriculture-dependent economy has over the years manifested  tendencies towards industrialisation, with the private sector being led by tourism, trading and fisheries, which are experiencing modest growth. Already, the banking and financial sector has been given a new outlook, with no sign of a halt to the inflow of more financial institutions. The government of President Jammeh, and the policies they instituted over the years have been very receptive of the financial sectors and that has made it possible for the enormous growth in the sector. All these factors have enabled the country to progress, with the people provided with alternative sources of finance to suit their varying needs, all in the quest for national development.

It is therefore not surprising that the IMF mission that visited the country last month was once more satisfied with the output of our economy, and confirmed that the country’s GDP is projected to grow by five and half per cent in real terms in 2011, while annual inflation would remain moderately elevated at about six per cent, reflecting food and fuel price pressure. Though the tourism sector is said to remain suppressed, owing to lingering effects of the economic slowdown in key European markets, it is expected to pick up later in the year. The mission further expressed satisfaction with the intention of the government to curb its borrowing needs beginning in 2011, with the goal of achieving near-zero net domestic borrowing by 2014.

These continuous thumbs up for The Gambia economy by IMF confirm the soundness of the economic policies of President Jammeh. It also shows that the country is advancing greatly towards the achievement of the national development blueprint -the Vision 2020. If such a steady economic expansion is sustained, there is no doubt that there exists the potential for the country to continue attracting more investors, leading to the establishment of more companies and creation of employment. What is therefore important is for the people to realise that the current leadership is directing the affairs of this country towards a sustainable future.  The people should take ownership of the national development process so that collectively we can produce a better Gambia.

“To make our wills obedient to good influences and to avoid evil, is to show the greatest wisdom. In order to follow this aim one must be guided by religion. Progress without religion is just like a life surrounded by unknown perils and can be compared to a body without a soul.

“Knowing that material and spiritual progress are essential to man, we must ceaselessly work for the equal attainment of both. Only then shall we be able to acquire that absolute inner calm so necessary to our well-being. Whenever conflict arises between material and spiritual values, the conscience plays an important role and anyone who suffers from a guilty conscience is never really free from this problem until he makes peace with himself and his conscience.

“Discipline of the mind is a basic ingredient of genuine morality and therefore of spiritual strength. Spiritual power is the eternal guide, in this life and the life after, for man ranks supreme among all creatures. Led forward by spiritual power, man can reach the summit destined for him by the Great Creator.

“Since nobody can interfere in the realm of God we should tolerate and live side by side with those of other faiths. In the mystic traditions of the different religions we have a remarkable unity of spirit. Whatever religion they may profess, they are spiritual kinsmen. While the different religions in their historic forms bind us to limited groups and militate against the development of loyalty to the world community, the mystics have already stood for the fellowship of humanity in harmony with the spirit of the mystics of ages gone by.

“No one should question the faith of others, for no human being can judge of the ways of God.

“However wise or however mighty a person may be, he is like a ship without a rudder if he is without God. A rudderless ship is at the mercy of the waves and the wind, drifts wherever they take it and if there arises a whirlwind it is smashed against the rocks and becomes as if it has never existed. It is our firm belief that a soul without Christ is bound to meet with no better fate. The love shown by our God to mankind should constrain all of us who are followers and disciples of Christ, to do all in our power to see to it that the message of salvation is carried to those of our fellows who have not had the benefit of hearing the good news.

“It is our conviction that all the activities of the children of men, which are not guided by the Spirit and council of God will bear no lasting fruits; they will not be acceptable in the sight of God. It will therefore come to naught as the tower of Babel came to naught. The grace of God is Eternal. Angels in Heaven and the Creation on Earth sing His Praise . We thank the Master of the world Almighty God. Power belongs to God. May God Our Creator, the Helper and Guiding Light of us all grant you His Wisdom that you may bear fruits for His Glory.”

Consciousness is variously defined as subjective experience, awareness, the ability to experience “feeling“, wakefulness, the understanding of the concept “self“, or the executive control system of the mind.[1] It is an umbrella term that may refer to a variety of mental phenomena.[2] Although humans realize what everyday experiences are, consciousness itself resists being defined, philosophers note (e.g. John Searle in The Oxford Companion to Philosophy):[3]

“Anything that we are aware of at a given moment forms part of our consciousness, making conscious experience at once the most familiar and most mysterious aspect of our lives.”

Consciousness in medicine (e.g., anesthesiology) is assessed by observing a patient’s alertness and responsiveness, and can be seen as a continuum of states ranging from alert, oriented to time and place, and communicative, through disorientation, then delirium, then loss of any meaningful communication, and ending with loss of movement in response to painful stimulation.[5]

Consciousness in psychology and philosophy typically means something beyond what it means for anesthesiology, and may be said in many contexts to imply four characteristics: subjectivity, change, continuity, and selectivity.[1][6] Philosopher Franz Brentano has suggested intentionality or aboutness (that consciousness is about something). However, within the philosophy of mind there is no consensus on whether intentionality is a requirement for consciousness.[7]

Consciousness is the subject of much research in philosophy of mind, psychology, neuroscience, cognitive science, cognitive neuroscience and artificial intelligence. Issues of practical concern include how the presence of consciousness can be assessed in severely ill or comatose people;[8] whether non-human consciousness exists and if so how it can be measured; at what point in fetal development consciousness begins; and whether computers can achieve a conscious state.[9][10][11]

Inspirational : a Fulfilling Life

Your destiny comes about as a result of what you do now. You are responsible for what you are doing and experiencing now, therefore you are responsible for the destiny you will experience in the future. You are in a constant state of creating your destiny, and every moment contributes to the destiny you will experience. What you are doing and experiencing now is your current reality. You have a great deal more control over your current reality than your ego has allowed you to remember. In fact, you are in a constant state of creating, manifesting and experiencing your reality. Each moment in your life is created, manifested and experienced by you for your growth and development. Let me further explain what I mean.

Creation is the act of bringing a thought to your mind, forming a plan for its implementation and execution, and putting that plan to action. Manifestation is the physical result of your mental creation. Experience is the way you choose to see and react to your manifestation.

Conciousness

Only he who bestirs himself can advance spiritually. The fool who uses extraneous aids for this, in the form of the ready-made opinions of others, only walks his path as if on crutches, while ignoring his own healthy limbs. But the moment he boldly uses all the abilities which lie dormant within him awaiting his call, …to help in his ascent, he is employing the talent entrusted to him in
accordance.

Therefore awake! Genuine faith lies only in conviction, and conviction comes
solely through an inflexible weighing and examining! See that you are truly
alive in the wonderful Creation of your God!
